Problems With Your Immigration Consultant Or Lawyer

Unfortunately, Immigration is an area where the immigration advisor is often on the "other side", looking out for his or her own interests, rather than yours.  Your Immigration Consultant or lawyer will often claim to have "insider knowledge" or "contacts" who can approve your case, and you may feel that they have more power than they actually do.  If you can't trust your advisor, and you are at their mercy, then the situation can result in disaster!

If you have retained a lawyer, his or her conduct is governed by a Law Society, and there is some protection from fraudulent or illegal acts.  All the lawyers at Lowe & Company are members of the Law Society of British Columbia, and are fully accountable.  We also carry Professional Liability Insurance of $2 Million per occurrence, which is much more than the $500,000 minimum required; however, none of our lawyers has ever had a claim in their combined 40+ years of practice.

The Canadian government has recognized many of the problems with Immigration Consultants, and now requires them to be registered as members of the Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants.

At Lowe & Company, we've helped many clients deal with Immigration consultants or lawyers that were not being honest or truthful with them. Here are some examples:

  • Clients were told their case was submitted to Canada Immigration, but in fact, it  was not.
  • Clients whose consultant or lawyer would not return calls, or had closed their offices.
  • Clients were told to sign documents in English, but couldn't read or take a copy of them.
  • Clients who were told to lie to Immigration officers.
  • Clients who were not given a copy of their applications or supporting documents, and told they were "trade secrets"

Sometimes the conduct is unethical; other times it is fraudulent and illegal. We have helped clients go after lawyers or consultants, and have sometimes been able to obtain refunds of monies they were cheated out of.
